Jewel, a work of art that badly, desperately needs translating
Kati-e is a girl who lives in a dream having her own penthouse type lodgings in New York (the name of the city is not told, but you get enough clues from the illustrations). She is a coder and an engineer and passionate about the wellfare of all animals and living creatures. Ti-bot is a cute robot Kati-e has created. She also has a bunch of friends to go on adventures in the real world of the future.
Pets and animals of all kinds are introduced in the series and this book deals with marine creatures and the problems, small and large, that they face. So lots of taking care of cute animals, a big adventure in a marine research vessel and a little bit of detective work. What could be better?
Small things lead into big discoveries
At least that is what I hope and believe. We simply need to get the most brilliant minds of the new generations interested in inventing technical cures for the problems that we, the middle aged, have created in our insane craving for plastics. And sooner the better. Preferably before the insides of humans and animals are turnt into plastic wrappings. And books like these are the answer. They inspire in a fun way.
To be a girl
The generation of L.O.L fans will love the big eyed protagonist and feminine illustrations which portray the future of girls in a broad way. The captain of the maritime ship reminds me of the female captain and captain trainee in the TV Mini series Warship Duncan and Kati-e is a wizard in coding and tecnological building. So this is a book which does not categorize female characters into boxes, but opens up a wide range of futures for girls of today. And all in a cute and lovable way.
This book and the whole series would have international fans and I do believe they would open and change the way 6-10 year old girls view the world. The problem is that they are in Finnish and only translated into a couple of languages. Sadly not yet English. One must only hope that this will change in the future. Finnish Moomins writer had a mission to teach readers peace, understanding and acceptance of different people. This book also has a mission, to help us find technological solutions to solve the problems we have created for the earth. And blimey, do we need these solutions!
